When the World Ski Championships were held in Oslo and Holmenkollen in 2011, it was a golden opportunity for Norges Bank to issue a 200-krone silver coin to mark the special importance of skiing in Norway.
Skiing and winter sports are deeply rooted in Norwegian culture, and the cradle of skiing is said to have originated in Morgedal in Telemark. The Nordic World Ski Championships were held in Holmenkollen from February 23 to March 6, 2011. The event was a huge public celebration where the World Cup was brought "home" to perhaps the most legendary ski slope in the world with a history dating back to 1892, and with a reputation as one of the world's most famous sports arenas regardless of sport.
Norwegian commemorative silver coin issued by Norges Bank in 2011
Published on the occasion of the Ski World Championships in Oslo
Embossed in the best embossing quality proof and 92.5% silver
Mintage of only 15,998 commemorative coins
NB: Some delivery time must be expected.
The coin is issued by Norges Bank and minted at the Norwegian Mint in Kongsberg. The coin's commemorative side is designed by Uniform Strategic Design by Ina Viktoria Kristiansen. The coin surface is divided into two horizontal parts. The lower part is relatively low and contains slanted lines that are intended to simulate ski tracks. In the upper part we find athletes forming a table. Note the female ski jumper, who was much discussed around the new Holmenkoll slope!
