Issued both in celebration of the Alpine World Ski Championships 2025 in Saalbach, Austria, and the country’s love of winter sports, World Champion captures the joy that arises when outstanding achievements make a whole country proud.
Whether skiing, snowboarding, sledging or snowshoeing through a snowy landscape, the connection to the winter wonderland is deeply rooted in the Austrians. There are few better natural experiences than gliding through virgin snow. Shifting your weight from side to side as you speed down a slope gives a sense of enormous physical freedom. At times like these, we feel like world champions as we savour the moment, master our personal challenges and take in the spectacular snow-covered scenery.
The coin’s reverse features the helmeted head of a skier with the number 1 emblazoned on it, symbolising first place. The word Weltmeister (world champion) is reflected in the skier’s goggles – the goal that every competitive athlete has in mind. The skier’s face is indicated purely through the coin’s contours and the design is rounded off by snow crystals in the background. The obverse of the coin shows the coats of arms of the nine federal states of Austria, as do all Austrian 5 euro coins.
Available in silver and copper, and designed without a year of issue, this timeless coin is dedicated to all the world champions who have made Austria proud and will continue to do so. Is there a better gift for someone who loves winter sports?
