"The Austrian Mint proudly presents the 2015 'Cosmology' 25 Euro Silver Niobium coin, a breathtaking tribute to the science of the universe's origin and development. This innovative bimetallic coin showcases the Mint's unique ability to combine precious silver with the extraordinary, color-changing properties of niobium. Through a process of anodic oxidation, the niobium core of this coin displays two distinct and mesmerizing colors – deep blue and golden yellow – that symbolize the vast and mysterious expanse of space. 'Cosmology' invites collectors on an intellectual and visual journey, exploring humanity's quest to understand the grandest of all subjects."
II. Unveiling the Universe: Design & Artistic Innovation
"The coin's design brilliantly illustrates key elements of cosmology, from the macrocosm to human endeavors in understanding it:
Obverse: The central niobium core of the obverse depicts the universe in its entirety, featuring stars, the planet Saturn with its iconic rings, and the Rosetta space probe – a groundbreaking mission to orbit a comet. The outer silver ring is inscribed with 'REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH' (Republic of Austria), the face value '25 EURO', and the year '2015'. Subtly integrated in the silver ring, lines and text represent the orbits of satellites around Earth, along with the wavelength of light and Ludwig Boltzmann’s fundamental formula S = k lnW, a nod to Austrian scientific heritage. The shifting colors of the niobium core, from deep blue to vibrant gold, dynamically enhance the cosmic theme.
Reverse: The reverse side focuses on humanity's tools for cosmic exploration. It features the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), depicted as it looks out into the cosmos. The design skillfully integrates known planets, such as Jupiter, which appear within the telescope's field of view. The outer silver ring, which partially overlaps the niobium core, contains key cosmological terms: 'MULTIVERSUM' (Multiverse), 'UNIVERSUM' (Universe), 'GALAXIE' (Galaxy), and 'SONNENSYSTEM' (Solar System), reflecting the layers of cosmic structure. Both sides of this intricate coin were masterfully designed by Austrian Mint engraver Helmut Andexlinger."
