II. The Thrill of the Race: Design & Artistry:
"The coin's design dynamically portrays the excitement of alpine skiing and the essence of the upcoming championships:
Reverse: The reverse of the coin features a stylized depiction of an alpine skier in full descent, kicking up snow as they navigate a gate. The sense of speed and agility is powerfully conveyed. In the background, the iconic Planai mountain, which hosts the World Championships, is visible, alongside elements representing the ski slopes and the festive atmosphere of the event. The inscription 'FIS ALPINE SKI WM SCHLADMING 2013' (FIS Alpine Ski World Championships Schladming 2013) and the year '2012' clearly mark the occasion. This dynamic design was created by the Austrian Mint's renowned engraver, Thomas Pesendorfer.
Obverse: The obverse showcases the distinctive nine-sided polygon shape, characteristic of Austrian 5 Euro commemorative coins. The central denomination '5 EURO' is encircled by the heraldic shields of Austria's nine federal provinces, signifying national unity. This side was designed by mint engraver Mag. Helmut Andexlinger."
